Beginning martial arts

Beginning martial arts as an adult.

Over the last 20 years or so martial arts has grown in popularity. As adults, it is important that we exercise, eat well and minimise stress in our lives. With so many gyms, boxing gyms, yoga and Pilates studios popping up all over the place, the market is saturated with choices. It is important that we don’t try to modernise and update martial arts to try and keep up with the current trends. The essential elements that make martial arts unique will get lost in the desire to please everyone. So if you are considering beginning martial arts, the following points may help.

The teachings take you on an outer and inner journey

Beginning martial arts as an adult I think that it is important to understand what martial arts is. When martial arts are taught correctly it is not just a way to learn how to fight or for learning killer self defence moves. The teachings take you on an outer and inner journey that leads to a more awakened and conscious way of living. As learning the moves of martial arts is the working surface on this journey, self defence, fitness and health are effective and great by-products of beginning martial arts as an adult.

Watch the class and see how the students interact with the teacher.

There is no one governing body in Martial Arts. Rather, the various styles usually belong to private organisations that may be connected to a government accreditation. But in general, most schools have no qualifications other than a black belt. So, when choosing a suitable school, it is important to watch the class and see how the students interact with the teacher.
