So, in part one, I discussed the importance of why the development of killer instinct is so relevant to what we do in martial arts. I established that killer instinct is not an external show of strength; it is not angry or aggressive. Rather it is neutral, void of any emotion. Killer instinct is icy cold where you are all business, it is not a put on and you are not play acting. It is a neutral state whereby you become very still, your eyes glaze over and you are free of thought. You are prepared to go all the way. At times, when I have had to use my killer instinct, I have warned my antagonist that if he forces me to act, I will not hold back. They usually get the picture, and you do not have to say much.
“I am not that kind of person.” I have heard this time and time again. Only to see the most passive of my students develop killer instinct when the right buttons are pushed. It only takes the one time as once you go there you only have to remember how that felt. Some people are naturals, but only a few. I have had students over the years that have an inbuilt, ready-made killer instinct. They are usually the kind of person that likes to hurt people. No matter what level you are, they will bash you and enjoy the process. Criminals generally have an innate skill for violence. Some full contact fighters have a natural killer instinct. But these people are different from the martial artist that wants to find and hone their killer instinct ,in a productive manner. There is a moral sense of behaviour that this other group does not have.
So how do you develop this killer instinct? You need to be carefully guided to it by a properly trained martial arts instructor. This is where the real reason free sparing is so important. It is the fastest vehicle for you to train your killer instinct. This is where your instructor tempers the sparring, so you don’t kill each other in the process. Killer instinct must be drawn out of you. Most of the people that came to my martial arts thought they wanted to learn self-defence.
Learning self-defence is like any other physical skill. Same as doing yoga, dancing or playing soccer. But Northstar martial arts is deep as it is unique. The NSMA dojo is where spirit moulds with courage and takes the student on a journey that they did not expect. The dojo is where you can let go and fully indulge the time that you are in class, without judgement or criticism you are there to work hard. As you develop your physical moves. I work with you to nurture the real reason you are studying martial arts; to gain personal mastery and wisdom. It is martial arts, and I expect the student to be able to defend them self. If killer instinct is not developed the student has no hope of defending themselves.
Your martial arts identity needs to be honed into icy cold violence and your antagonist will cop you full force if they do not yield.
