The expectations of life depend upon diligence; the mechanic that would perfect his work must first sharpen his tools.

“A man should be upright, not kept upright” Marcus Aurelius
The thing I would want my child to consider is “think before your promise”. Keeping your word is about integrity and that means being sure before you say you will so something.
“A Black Belt is a White Belt that never quits.”
Both winning and giving up are habits to learn. I was fortunate enough to learn very young that if I really wanted to have something, I had to knuckle down to get it. Being determined to do something is a fantastic trait. Determination requires a single minded focus and an unshakeable belief that the result is definitely worth the effort. I have learned a few important lessons around determination:
Endurance
Endurance is one of the most difficult disciplines, but it is to the one who endures that the final victory comes.”Buddha.
To dig deeper, to go further, to follow through on what you truly believe is right even when everyone else has dropped away.
Gradings help you stay focused! In our busy day to day life it can be hard to see regular and obvious improvements. Working out at the gym, doing laps or regular jogging are all great, but who is there to challenge you? When are you asked to go a little harder, push a little further, Northstar Gradings do just that. As trainers we ask the question; Are you going for grading? If not why not?
Do what you say you are going to do.
This is the first step to success. Your word is very important in creating trust. Trust is important in being a leader.
Learn good habits to help you achieve your goals
If you want to achieve something, set out a clear path to achieving that goal. Gradings at Northstar allow the students to set a short term goal, commit to self discipline by regularly attending class and training hard, then finally attaining the new belt. This easy format can be applied to anything in life.
Every couple of months I have a personal session with my teacher and he checks the progress of my meditation practise. He reminded me that with in each meditation sitting each repetition of the mantram is a new beginning and new committment to the practise. The effects of this ancient ritual are not always immediate, and may only surface after years and years of consistent practise. Slowly and surely they seep into your being, and bring the deep well of presence and stillness closer to the surface.
1. Service to SELF
* Not criticising yourself for past actions. They have already happened!
* Self care; nourish the body, nourish the mind
* Keep your house free of clutter. Keep it simple
* Be still 3 times per day, become present and let go of the mind for just a sec.
* Winning is not always about passing the finish line first, having the most money, the biggest house or having the last word. Winning is about how much of a difference we’ve made around us. If we’ve done our very best, then we’ve won, regardless of what anyone else may say…
* There can only be one winner in a competition but life isn’t a competition.
Winning is about having a winning attitude and winning ways.
Stillness.
* No movement in body or mind. Sitting completely still free from attachment.
* The pure neutral state that all movement arises from.
* Stillness is the one constant that cannot be changed, moved or manipulated.
