what is martial arts?

By Andy Dickinson.

A kick is a kick and a punch is a punch. What makes a system of martial arts unique is the framework that holds the principles together and the objectives behind the moves. In Taekwondo, Judo, kickboxing and any other martial arts that makes competition the priority, winning the game is the primary driver and the techniques, philosophies and system objectives revolve around that mind set.

In competition orientated martial arts such as Taekwondo and Judo, there is physical improvement and there is spirit to continue, but Martial Sports attract the physically strong and/or gifted. The strong win, the weak lose. Where ever you find sport, ego is just around the corner. If martial arts are involved in sport then it is not Shinbudo (Martial Arts developed by Andy Dickinson Sensei). MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is the latest Martial Arts craze. It is rough, aggressive and aim is to win by hurting your opponent. It is nothing more than a blood sport.

Traditional/classical Martial Arts that have links to a line of legitimate teachers, such as Karate, Ju Jitsu, kenjutsu, Iaido, Wushu and others can best be described as the glue that holds it together. Though, if the traditional martial artist expert has not learned to use his ancient techniques as a working surface to observe the mind and is still concerned with learning self defence or winning then his practice has no more substance than an aerobics class. If the traditionalist is more concerned with the badges on his uniform, counting in Japanese or Korean or generally being more Asian than the Asians then he has his identity tied up in his martial art and ego is still the driver.
