Excelling at School

It takes effort and commitment to choose the right high school for your child. And it can be a costly and time consuming task. From my experience you don’t necessarily need to be a talented or gifted student, but you do need to be consistent and have a work hard ethic. This can be done, and not at the of expense losing a childhood to over zealous parents. By starting early, including your child in activities that are stimulating and create a sense of achievement and confidence. For example; swimming, a musical instrument, a language…and of course martial arts.

Then if and when they are ready for the student that is motivated extra study can be looked at. My own son; Tom, was a student at Scholani Education for 18 months and really enjoyed it.  As parents we did not push him rather supported him and nurtured his interest. Below is an exert from an interview that I did with Nicholas Rutledge, the Principal at Scholani.

Leading martial artist Andy Dickinson talks with Nick Rutledge, Principal and Founder  of Scholani Education.

Andy Dickinson: So there is an advantage or understanding that they can add to and excel in their mainstream schooling. If a child is having difficulty in a particular subject, they can also come and they can take lessons and that will help them to improve at mainstream schooling. Then of course if they excel considerably they may have the opportunity to then try out for, say, OC, selective or scholarships.

Nick Rutledge: That’s right. But a lot of the students that come here, they have – or their parents have – a specific goal which is to do better in their end of year school exams, perhaps to get into a selective school if they are of that age, or win a scholarship. Down load below...
